Karen Krasne is taking the dessert world by storm. From decadent dark chocolate cakes to flower topped fruit tarts, each creation is a feast for the eyes and palate. Forbes Magazine recognizes her as one of the
top ten pastry chefs in the nation. And the proof is certainly in the pudding. Krasne’s delectable treats sell like hotcakes
at Extraordinary Desserts, her popular confectionery chain in San Diego. Her award winning skills were honed after
her days at UH Mānoa. But she says much of her inspiration was first
ignited in classes that had nothing to do with pastry. Karen Krasne: I was in modern dance, I studied
architecture, I got a minor in French, so a lot of these things culminated in making
the desire for me to want to go bigger globally. Krasne earned a food science and human nutrition
degree and then jetted off to Paris. That’s where her baking talents blossomed. But her love for Hawaiʻi never left. Krasne: The ocean and the beauty and the culture
and the food and the flowers it goes on and on and on. To have that every morning when you wake up,
it’s just heavenly. Hawai‘i’s essence is baked into her show
stopping delicacies. She even showcases jams and jellies made on Maui. Outside of the kitchen,
success continues to be sweet. Krasneʻs best-selling cookbook is now in
its third print.
