Hey guys, it’s Ro! Welcome to another Nerdy
Nummies! I got so many requests from you guys to make
something Finding Nemo Themed, and, the new movie Finding Dory is coming
out, and I realized, we still haven’t made something Finding Nemo! So we are going
to fix that today! We are gonna be making a very yummy cake, and I’m
super excited! I love all of the characters in that film,
especially Dory, I feel like spiritually connected, we don’t have the
best memories, but we’re positive, and we’re go-getters! So today, we’re
gonna be making a Finding Nemo cake with a bunch of little characters, including
Dory. Let’s get started! The cake that we’re gonna be making today
is gonna be a 2-tiered cake. We’re gonna be doing a larger cake on the bottom, a smaller
cake on the top, and the recipe is going to be a blue velvet cake!
So it will look like under the sea! The things you will need, will be: 6 Cups
of all purpose flour, 3 cups of sugar, 2 cups of buttermilk, 3 cups of oil, 3 teaspoons
of dark cocoa powder, 2 teaspoons of white vinegar, 2-1/2 teaspoons
of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 3 eggs, 2 tablespoons of blue food coloring,
and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Now let’s put it all together! The first thing that we’re gonna do is whisk
together our dry ingredients in this bowl. Our flour, sugar, cocoa powder,
baking soda, and salty-salty! Just whisk together until they’re well combined. Now we’re gonna mix together our wet ingredients,
I’m gonna start with my eggs, I like to do the eggs first, so that it’s
easier to break the yolk! Gonna add your oil, buttermilk, vinegar, and
vanilla! Time to whisk, just be careful not to splash
it all over the place! We’ve got our wet ingredients and our dry
ingredients, now we are going to combine them, I’m going to be adding the wet into
the dry very slowly, and mixing very slowly because this bowl is full! Last step to making our batter we are going
to add our blue food coloring, you can add however much you’d like to achieve
the color blue that you want. But the amount that I’m adding is going to make
a really cool aquamarine color! Over here we’ve got our pans, we have 2 of them, 1 is a 10 inch pan, the other 1 is a 6 inch pan and they are both
2 inches deep. I’ve got both of them greased and lined
with a piece of parchment paper at the bottom, so that your cake won’t stick. Now we’re gonna scoop the batter into the
pans. I have a big scoop, I’m not gonna pick it
up and pour it because this is a very dense cake, and it’s really heavy,
I don’t trust myself, I will probably drop it! We’ve got our batter in our pans and now
it is time to bake. We are gonna slow bake both of these because it is a very
thick, dense recipe. You’re gonna heat your oven to 325 degrees
and bake the smaller 1 for about an hour and the larger 1 about an hour and
15 minutes. It’s OK if they bake at the same time, you
just take the smaller 1 out first. While our cakes are baking, we are gonna make
our decorations, this is the perfect time to make decorations because these
cakes need to slow bake. So what I have here are some fondant and some
simple tools, the fondant colors that I have are: Blue, green, orange,
red, purple, yellow, pink, white and black! And then for tools I have
a straw, a skewer, a star cookie cutter, a little tip, some water, a little
fondant cutter, it kind of looks like a mini pizza cutter, a little rolling pin
and a sharp cutting knife. I’ve laid down a piece of wax paper so that
the fondant won’t stick. And I’ve left each fondant wrapped up in a
little bit of plastic wrap so that they won’t dry out while we’re working with
them. The first character that I’m gonna make
is Nemo, we’re gonna take orange, black and white fondant. And now, I’m gonna start molding Nemo’s
body. Working with fondant is very similar to sculpting, so if you like sculpting
you might really love working with fondant as well! I’m just gonna start shaping Nemo’s
face, I’m gonna make is little fin on top, just pinching the top. And a little fin
in the back, we need a little fin! Gonna make his little white stripes. Taking
our white fondant, I’m gonna roll it out thin. I’m gonna cut 3 strips, first
strip is gonna go right in front of his fin. Then we’re gonna place 1 more strip
in the middle of the fin and then 1 at the back. I’ve got the white fondant
on, now I’m gonna make a little smile, roll out the black fondant very
thin, we need very thin strips. To go on the top and the bottom of every white
stripe. Also made some fins, remember, Nemo’s little
fin, is on the right and his big fin is on the right….Left! Hah-hah-hah-hah! I’m just gonna stick him onto the side! I’m gonna make another character, Peach,
this is the little starfish! He’s so cute! Just gonna lightly roll it out, I want it
to be pretty thick. Just big enough for our star cookie cutter!
Just gonna use my finger, go all the way around. Taking a skewer, poking little
holes for design, making a texture. Then using the black and red fondant we’re
gonna make 2 little eyeballs and a smile! I’m gonna teach you how to make some seaweed,
it is super easy! We have green fondant, we rolled it out thin,
and now you’re gonna take a little fondant cutter, or you can use a sharp cutting
knife, I’m gonna cut a rectangle, then cut long triangles, I’m gonna go up,
down, up, down, up, down so I’ll get a bunch of them! Now you’re gonna take a straw and wrap your
triangles around them. And let them sit to harden. An easy way to make coral, using fondant,
is to roll it flat, and then, cut out a bunch of holes. If you don’t have a cookie
cutter that is super small, I just like to use this, little tip. You just
want to make it look like swiss cheese! I’m gonna keep making a bunch
of different decorations using the fondant, all of the different colors. You
can make as many or as little as you’d like. Once your cakes have baked and had plenty
of time to cool, I leveled them using a cake leveler and cut them into 3 sections. And you’re gonna take the big cake, and
we’re just gonna frost the top. Because we have so many layers I’m gonna
do a very thin coat of icing. Now we’re gonna add the next layer, then
we frost again, add the last layer and frost again! Just finished icing our cake,
we gave it a crumb coat, because we are going to be covering our cake with
fondant. And now I’m gonna do the exact same thing to our little cake! We’re
gonna assemble and frost, give it a crumb coat! Got a big ball of marshmallow fondant that
I’ve colored to be aqua, you can make it any shade of blue that you’d like but
I thought this color was pretty cool! I love this it was so bright. I’m just gonna place it down here on top
of the work surface, and I’ve covered the whole work surface with powdered sugar,
and look at this! We’ve got a big roller! A big fondant roller!
This thing is like 1/2 my size! We’re gonna roll out our fondant, you want
it to be between 1/4 and 1/2 an inch thick. We rolled it out, now I’m just using my
hands to dust off any excess powdered sugar. So I’m gonna take my fondant, we’re
gonna roll it back, we’re gonna cover our little cake first. I’m gonna pick
it up, place it right on top. And then I’m gonna slowly stretch the sides,
slowly, slowly! Now we’re gonna gently press down, make
sure that the fondant is sticking to the frosting, that’s what we want! You’re gonna press down on the top and all
of the sides. Take a sharp cutting knife, now we’re gonna
cut off the excess fondant. We’re just gonna cut all the way around
the base. Peel off the excess fondant, then I’m gonna make 1 more cut, do a little bit of
fine-tuning at the bottom. This is what the cake should look like, and
now we’re gonna do it to our larger cake. Cakes are covered in fondant
and I’ve transferred our large cake to a cake stand, now we’re gonna add 4 straws
in the center of the cake, for some structural support, before we stack them. So I’m gonna take a little straw, and I’m
gonna place him into the middle of the cake, just eyeballing it, doesn’t have
to be perfect. Then I’m gonna pick 1 up at a time and cut
‘em, place him back in. Once our structure is in place we can place
the smaller cake right on top. Our cake is assembled, I’ve laid out all
of our decorations and now it is time for my favorite part, it is time to decorate! I’m gonna be using a little bit of royal
icing that I dyed to be the same color as the cake to attach all of the pieces. Also,
another fun decoration is I took graham crackers, popped ‘em in a blender,
ground ‘em up, and I’m gonna be sprinkling them on the layers of the cake
to look like sand! You can just have fun with it, decorate it
however you want! Ta-da! Here is the Finding Nemo Cake that we made today! A big thank you to you guys for suggesting

got Dory, and then down here, one of my favorite characters, I had to put
