(Organisation of Tourist Education and Training) of Rhodes, confectionery. and I’m occupied in our family business as a confectioner. I’ve chosen this job because my father is a confectioner my grand father a confectioner generally, we’re all confectioners. I like working on sth simple and make it big or the opposite. In a sweet shop you can find a selling place where there are the sweets’ cabinets the workplace for the pastry the chocolate place where we can produce different chocolate products. Ovens, too,where we bake our sweets or bread and then, there’s the storage department with fridges, freezers, etc. Finishing a school, public or private, you can find a job in a hotels, in restaurants, to work as a freelancer, in cafes, most cafes serve sweets. I work 8,12,16 hours daily it depends on the work and the period of the year. For example, at Christmas time I work for 16 hours. Being a confectioner means no fixed working hours, no holidays. It’s easier to find a job as a confectioner than a cook. It’s thought to be an in-demand job. The salary of an assistant confectioner starts at 900 euros since a chef confectioner can make 2,000 – 2,500 euros depending on the business. Insurance is provided, public or private. You can be a confectioner either experientially, by being trained
next to an older one or by attending one of the many existing schools, a public OTEK or private. To be a certified confectioner you must have finished a school no matter if it is of 2 years or 6 months. To get your certificate you have to work for 2 semesters as apprenticeship at a hotel or restaurant or cafe. The professional rights of this job are guaranteed by the Syndicate of the Chef confectioners of Hellas. To enroll at a school, first of all you have to decide if it will be an OTEK school or a private or any other state school. You have to apply and get the information for confectioner or chef. You can find this information at the schools sites or the public OTEK. I had called OTEK of Rhodes, they told me to apply for and they would call me back. I was lucky and they accepted me, because as a confectioner at a state school you need two years. It’s not like cooks for whom there are have ten classes each year. To get my certificate as a confectioner I spent my 1st semester at Rethymno Palace and the 2nd semester at Lefkoniko Beach at the seaside of Rethymno.
